San Diego Prenatal Chiropractor

Can you go to a chiropractor while pregnant? Yes!

In fact, a prenatal chiropractor is recommended during pregnancy. Learn more about prenatal chiropractic below, along with the many benefits of receiving your chiropractic care from Dr. Deborah Marin-Nikolin at Rooted Life Chiropractic.

Prenatal Chiropractic: The Basics

The practice of prenatal chiropractic was designed to help restore normal function to the human body. By making gentle spinal adjustments, we can influence the nervous system, which affects every other system that keeps us going, including:

  • Digestive

  • Circulatory

  • Hormonal

  • Eliminatory

  • Glandular

  • Immunological

  • Muscular

  • Skeletal

  • Respiratory

  • Reproductive

Think of your nervous system as the body’s command and communication center. When it’s not operating optimally, your body’s systems don’t function the way they should either. Chiropractic spinal adjustments reduce interference to the nervous system, often caused by stress, whether physical or emotional.

You don’t need to be in pain to receive chiropractic care. In fact, you’ll feel and function better if you don’t wait until you have a problem to see a chiropractor. Regular chiropractic visits can help your general well-being and let you live your fullest life at your greatest potential.

Benefits of Prenatal Chiropractic

It might surprise you to learn that prenatal chiropractic is actually recommended. There are numerous reasons why it’s so beneficial:

  • Studies show it can reduce the amount of time you spend in labor by up to 31 percent. That could amount to hours less of pain!

  • Prenatal chiropractic can also reduce the pain commonly experienced during pregnancy.

  • It helps your baby assume a healthy position in utero, rather than a less desirable breech presentation.

  • You can potentially have an easier labor and delivery with prenatal chiropractic, including a reduced likelihood of complications.

  • Pregnant moms can enjoy their pregnancy more when they simply feel better, allowing them to continue activities that they enjoy.

If you are already advancing in your pregnancy or have been pregnant before, you may have experienced some of the common

complaints that bring women in to see us at Rooted Life Chiropractic:

  • Back pain and another discomfort

  • Desire to relieve pain without pharmaceuticals

  • Pregnancy headaches

  • Gastrointestinal problems (acid reflux, constipation, diarrhea, etc.)

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Baby in breech position

Let us help you feel your best and make your pregnancy more comfortable with prenatal chiropractic.

Webster Technique

At Rooted Life, we use what’s known as the Webster Technique when providing chiropractic care to our pregnant patients. This method was created specifically to be used for prenatal chiropractic.

The Webster Technique helps us evaluate and correct your pelvis for proper alignment and movement. This way, your baby can move more freely and settle into the best position for birth.

Why is pelvic alignment so important? When the pelvis is not correctly aligned, tension is increased in the tone of the ligaments that connect the uterus to the pelvis. This can result in a distortion of the uterine space. Your baby has less freedom of movement, and you may be more uncomfortable, including during labor and delivery.

It’s very easy for the pelvis to become misaligned during pregnancy. As your baby grows, more stress is put on the body’s connective tissue to accommodate this growth. And your tendons and ligaments are already stretching in preparation for childbirth.

Furthermore, your posture is radically changed, with more weight being carried in the front of your body and a larger curve in your lower spine. You may stand, sit, or sleep differently, which can actually exacerbate spine problems that then result in other unwanted symptoms and discomfort.

Prenatal chiropractic with the Webster Technique lets you break that chain of pain. Dr. Marin-Nikolin has received extra training in the Webster Technique to bring this method to her San Diego pregnant moms, and she is Webster certified.

Prenatal Chiropractic as Part of a Holistic Healthy Pregnancy

Prenatal chiropractic care isn’t a miracle cure. We like to see it as one part of a holistic healthy pregnancy. To help your chiropractic sessions be more successful during pregnancy, we recommend that you:

  • Receive proper nutrition through a nourishing diet and supplements

  • Stay hydrated by drinking sufficient water

  • Get enough sleep

  • Reduce stress

  • Engage in exercise as approved by your healthcare provider

Rooted Life Continuum of Care

At Rooted Life, we are about more than just prenatal chiropractic visits. We provide a continuum of care that starts with pregnancy and includes other essential chiropractic services.

Infant Chiropractic

Pregnancy and birth can be traumatic for your baby as well as for you. A breach or posterior position can place pressure on an infant’s spine for months, resulting in stress or injury. This can then lead to difficulty in nursing, digestive conditions, colic, reflux, delays in developmental milestones, and torticollis (when contracted neck muscles cause the head to tilt down or to the side). Dr. Marin-Nikolin uses extremely gentle techniques in her infant adjustments (no cracking). Her touch is as gentle as the one you would use to check the ripeness of a tomato.

Pediatric Chiropractic

As your child grows, they are subject to the same stresses to the spine that you are. It’s never too early to start receiving regular chiropractic care. We offer pediatric chiropractic to help your child’s spine and nervous system function as optimally as possible.

Postpartum Chiropractic

Your body undergoes a dramatic and sudden change when you give birth. Postpartum chiropractic helps:

  • Realign the pelvis and lower back after the effects of the hormone relaxin stretch the body to allow for childbirth

  • Assist the nervous system in dealing with wildly fluctuating hormone levels

  • Counter repetitive movements and stressful positions related to nursing, carrying the baby, using car seats, and other tasks that require new moms to have the strength and flexibility of Olympic gymnasts!
